January Jefferson Award

Let’s put our hands together for Analuna Brambila, our Jefferson Award winner for the month of January. Analuna has been a volunteer at Summer of Service (S.O.S) for the last five years. S.O.S. is a camp designed to get middle school students involved in service activities. Analuna began as a member in the 6^th grade, and now she is a leader within the program. She and her devoted colleagues arrived bright and early at 8 AM to enthusiastically start their service. The “hodgepodge” of service opportunities included volunteering at homeless shelters, elderly homes, water quality testing, and a variety of other service activities. Today, as a leader, Analuna is captivated by how excited the kids are to perform volunteer activities and how easily they fall in love with service. Her service is particularly effective by providing service opportunities for middle school students, which are usually difficult to come by. Being exposed to service at a young age, encouraged Analuna to become active in her community and continue through high school.

November Jefferson Award

Congratulations to Parker Bovenberg, a senior at Pioneer High School. After doing his Sophomore Project on childhood obesity, he took action and founded the club

“Teens Getting Involved Finally” (TGIF). He and other Pioneer students provided supervision for kindergarten and elementary school students during PTA meetings. They planned engaging activities for the kids that got them excited about physical activity for one to two hour meetings. Parker not only prevented childhood obesity,

but he allowed parents to become more involved in their kids’ lives by becoming more active in their schools.

October Jefferson Award

Congratulations to Hannah Marianetti, a senior at Pioneer High School, for winning the Jefferson Award for the month of October. Last year Hannah served as a translator for American doctors providing free plastic surgery for children in Venezuela. They focused on patients with cleft lip, a birth defect that causes a severe speech impediment. Not only does it alter their appearance, but it can also lead to detrimental hearing loss. Many of these patients endured harsh bullying for a condition they were born with on a daily basis. Through Hannah’s service, she realized that the constant teasing of the children affected the parents and families more than it hurt the child. After two weeks, the doctors were able to successfully complete over 200 surgeries. Today, these patients are living a normal life, free of ridicule and rapidly improving their speaking skills. Hannah was so motivated and impacted by her experience in Venezuela she has decided to continue her contributions to the community in the future.

September Jefferson Award

Congratulations to Jessica Garcia a junior at Pioneer High School. She is the first Jefferson award winner this year for the month of September. Jessica was able to individually organize a book drive at Almaden Elementary School for the after school program. Her influence sparked from the knowledge that these students obtained very low reading levels. She believed that the perfect solution would be to provide these children with books to bring home everyday for more practice. Jessica was able to raise over 700 books. “I believe that I changed kids’ lives. Maybe one day they will become teachers or educators all because I gave them a book to take home.” Jessica hopes that her service will inspire other students to get involved and try to help the community in some way.

Jefferson Service Award Winner-April

Congratulations to Rohini Behl, a junior at Pioneer, the Jefferson Service Award winner for the month of April. Her community service was performed at Joyce Ellington Public Library where she spent the majority of her time tutoring students who spoke english as a second language by using her AP Spanish skills to facilitate the transition. In addition to english, she tutored students in math and science. Her second task was to organize shelves and clean library materials. “This service really inspired me, the children grew attached to me and always be very enthusiastic to see me...They were unaware just how much they have done for me.”

Walk for Water - Come out and support the H2O for Life club. This Saturday from 10:00-4:00 in the Pioneer stadium, students will be walking the track to raise money for clean drinking water in Malawi, Africa. You can cheer students on, buy student made bracelets or water bottles, and support Lacrosse in the afternoon. The Snackshack will be open.

Service Learning Carwash - Bring down your cars this Saturday from 9:00-3:00. All proceeds go towards supporting student service activities at Pioneer.

Carson Swim Project

Jefferson Service Award Winner-February

Congratulations to Shasta Hudson, a sophomore at Pioneer High School, for winning the Jefferson Award in February. She, along with two other students, organized a school wide blanket drive for San Jose Family Shelter. She realized after a fundraising dinner that the homeless needed more help than she knew. Shasta and the other girls collected 109 blankets. “It was a priceless feeling to know that giving to the people in need really improved their lives, even if it was in a small way.” Shasta also said “Although running a blanket drive seems like a lot of hard work, all of the time put in really paid off.”

Jefferson Service Award Winner - January

Congratulations to Jefferson Service Award winner for the month of January, Gianna Zamora. Gianna, a Sophomore at Pioneer High School, along with two other friends, organized a school-wide blanket drive for San Jose Family Shelter. She says she was inspired by hearing stories of their circumstances once they returned to the streets and knew something had to be done to improve their conditions. After creating banners, fliers, making a webpage, and delivering small speeches, Gianna and the other student leaders collected 109 blankets. The experience of coordinating this blanket drive has further developed my leadership skills," she also commented that the blanket drive "has proved that any student can make a real difference in the community" and has inspired her to seek future philanthropic opportunities.

Jefferson Service Award WInner - December

Congratulations to Jefferson Service Award winner for the month of December, Adam Donald. Adam is a junior at Pioneer High School, volunteered to do community service with the Humane Society Silicon Valley. He started out working in a program called Compassion In Action. Through this he helped train dogs at the shelter. Then, he volunteered at the HSSV annual summer camp. He was a camp counselor for two weeks. During the camp he taught the kids about different types of animals and how to properly treat them. He also led fun animal related activities for the kids to participate in. He feels that through service he was able to be a role model to kids and teach them not only about caring for animals but also how to develop leadership skills.

Hey Everyone! Here’s some information about Jefferson.

Jefferson is a nationally recognized award that is based on student’s impacts in their community. It is appealing to colleges and rewards their determination. The coordinators will select one person to win every month, so don’t worry if you don’t win the first time you apply!

Why would someone want to win Jefferson? It is appealing to colleges, recognizes your efforts, rewards your determination to better your community, and there are a variety of prizes that could be won.

How does somebody get nominated? You can give the person’s name and grade to Mr. Burrell or one of the student coordinators, Kailey Phillips, Kelli Gutierrez, and Jolie Lou. You can also email them at Kailey@phsservicelearning.org

How does somebody win? After you get nominated you will be interviewed. The winner is based on the impact you made, your personal connection with service, and how you grew from your experience. Just a reminder, Jefferson is not based on how many hours of service you do.

Service Learning Leadership has gone off to a great start for the 2009-2010 year. This year we have a handful of strong returners as well as talented newcomers that are excited for what’s in store. This past week in class, we have gotten to know each other more through daily ice breakers and team building activities as well as mapped out projects for this upcoming year.

S Period- Sweet!

Hello everyone, sorry for such a late update. We've been hard at work on the website, among other things. Hopefully the site will be up and running for you all soon!

Now, more to the point. As many of you have noticed (and rejoiced!) Pioneer's S-periods are back. More than just shorter classes, there is now an hour after school every Monday to keep you on track in your classes, and just as importantly, to help your community. Many different clubs and groups meet during S Periods here at Pioneer, and here's just a taste test of what you can do to help your community and get those all important service hours.

Y-Achievers: Is working with kids your "thing"? If it is, Y-Achievers is for you. Meeting in Mr. Koring's room (451), you will learn how to work with kids for both their benefit and yours. Working with kids is extremely rewarding and often very fun, so be sure to check it out!

CLASP: CLASP stands for Counseling Leadership About Smoking Pressures. Be sure to see what this group us all about if you would like to prevent underage tobacco use. Club meetings are in Ms. Birnel's room, 359.

Support for Battered Women Network: If you would like to help aid battered women, training in Mr. Conrad's room 452 would be a great place to start.

New Global Citizens (NGC): Led by our very own Allie Steinkopf and Erika Morikawa, NGC helps make the world a better place by starting in our community. Meetings are in Mr. Burrell's P4.

Green Club: Keep San Jose beautiful! Green club is currently working on their very own recycling program. Meet in Ms. O'Hara's room 300 at the very beginning of S-period.

Each and every one of these clubs has space avaliable, so be sure to check them out!

Outreach Fair Success!

Everyone here in Mr. Burrell's sixth period would like to thank those of you that made the Outreach Fair last week such a huge success! Thank you everyone! We looked back at the event as a class and determined that it was one of the best, if not the best, Outreach Fair that Pioneer has ever hosted. A total of 51 organizations were present, 36 of which were nonprofit organizations and the other fifteen were student clubs.

On a personal note, I'm stoked that the fair was such a success. I was able to talk to several of the organizations as I was helping set things up, and they all seemed friendly and helpful. It's great to know that we are helping people that want to make a difference in the community. The variety of organizations was astounding, as YMCA Camp Campbell, Birthright, Red Cross, Tech Museum, Humane Society, and the Second Harvest Food Bank all made appearances, and that's just the tip of the iceberg! Thanks again to these organizations, and everyone else that helped make this event really rock! We hope to see you all next year!

As we're hard at work, I thought that I would let everyone know how awesome the Outreach Fair will be this Wednesday the 17th. If number is any indicator, there are nearly 55 organizations scheduled to be here at Pioneer Wednesday. So if anyone is worried about not being able to find a quality organization - think again!

Important Dates

While we are hard at work on the Outreach Fair that will occur Wednesday the 17th, I'm here to update you on Community Service Awards:

Presidential Service Awards: For students that have bettered their community through many hours of community service, the deadline for the Presidential Service Award is quickly approaching. The Presidential Service award is very prestigious and quickly recognizes students as important members of their community. This is a huge deal and looks very impressive on transcripts, so be sure to get the paperwork in!!!

The deadline for applications is September 24th to Mr. Burrell in Room P4. Applications are available in student services or Room P4. The formal ceremony to recognize students takes place on October 27th during S Period, most likely in the media center.

Qualifications: All hours must be completed within one calendar year

Bronze: 100+ hours

Silver: 175+ hours

Gold: 250+ hours

Another thing that we are spending a lot of time on is the Outreach Fair, as previously noted.

Community Outreach Fair: The Community Outreach fair is a great way to find organizations that need help in exchange for community service hours. Especially convenient for sophomores and the sophomore project, all students are welcome to sign up for any of the 20-30 nonprofit organizations that will be attending. The fair takes place on September 17th from 8-11:45AM in the quad. There are so many different opportunities for you as a student to find a quality organization to work for that it is almost too good to be true. Be sure to check it out at brunch if you can!

Once we get rolling on projects and service activities, it may be a great idea to subscribe to our blog using RSS. A link to do so is on the right side of the page, just click "Subscribe to: Posts". It's fast, easy, and low profile so you can keep in check when you have time, but it doesn't bug you while you're busy with everything else that you are doing. I'd definitely recommend it.
